About

Anna Jung is a ceramic artist based in Seoul, Korea. Inspired by the art of craft and the pliable nature of clay, Jung depicts metamorphoses of daily objects through her work.  After receiving her BFA at Alfred University,  Jung spent the following year as a resident artist and an apprentice at Weimar Porzellan in Germany. Then she founded Semi Semi Ceramics, a ceramic studio to teach students from 2018 to 2020. Now she is working as a full time studio artist in Seoul, Korea.

Artist Statement

My artistic practice is deeply rooted in the concept of metamorphosis, which is a reflection of my nomadic upbringing. My journey from Seoul to America and back to Korea has shaped my perspective on the transient nature of surroundings and the constant transformation of the familiar into the unfamiliar. This experience informs my work, where I explore how the true essence of an object is revealed when it undergoes transformation.

Using clay as my primary medium, I manipulate everyday objects into curious, often rebellious forms that challenge our perceptions of functionality and art. This process mirrors my own experiences of adapting to new environments, where common items became anchors of familiarity in otherwise strange settings. By recontextualizing these familiar forms, I invite viewers to reconsider their relationship with material culture and the concept of permanence.

My work lies at the intersection of contemporary sculpture and functional design, celebrating the beauty in mundane objects while questioning traditional categorizations. Through this approach, I hope to provoke reflection on our ever-changing culture and our ability to adapt. Ultimately, my art aims to offer an experience that mirrors our evolving cultural landscape and encourages an examination of one's true nature and resilience in the face of constant change.
